WAYLAND —
Teaching is a profession that may no longer have a reputation for paying a low salary.
Fourteen classroom teachers in Wayland and Weston are slated to earn six figure incomes this school year.
A salary report from the Wayland Public Schools showed Wayland High School teachers Patricia Gavett, Helen Rainoff and Ronald Stevens will earn $100,388 in the 2007-08 school year, along with Middle School science teacher Brian Flaherty and world languages teacher Joan Lanagan, and Claypit Hill teacher Nancy Puia.
"A teacher’s salary increases by 10 percent over their last three years if they are retiring and have worked in Wayland for more than seven years," said Superintendent Gary Burton.
The scale for teacher salaries in Wayland ranges from $41,414 for a first-year teacher, and increases up to a base maximum of $98,799 if a teacher has 12 years of experience and a doctorate degree.
Next year, the high end of Wayland’s base salary ranges will increase to more than $100,000.
Burton said those salaries are "comparable" to peer towns such as Weston, Lexington and Wellesley.
Lisa Hollis, human resources director of Weston Public Schools, said eight teachers in Weston will make over $100,000 this year.
Each department head at the High School has a base salary of up to $88,265, but department heads have an extra "15 percent differential" because their job requires them to teach, mentor other teachers, conduct evaluations, and hold conferences with parents, said Hollis.
The eight teachers with those salaries in Weston are all department heads.
Base salary ranges in Weston this year are $40,407 to $88,265, said Hollis.
"Those are generally the salary ranges you’re going to find in school systems like ours," said Hollis.
Teachers in Natick have lower salaries than those in Wayland or Weston.
Marianne Davis, director of human resources for the Natick Public Schools, said the system has a salary range from $39,728 as a starting salary, to a top salary of $81,243 if a teacher has a doctorate degree.
"It’s fair to say that no teachers make six figures," said Davis.
Aside from teachers, the highest paid positions in both the Wayland and Weston school systems are superintendents.
Burton is slated to make $169,843, and departing Weston Superintendent Alan Oliff is paid $179,544 in combined salary and annuities, Hollis said.
The next highest paying positions in the Wayland Schools are Director of Student Services Doris Goldthwaite at $127,574, Assistant Superintendent Brad Crozier at $127,000, and High School principal Patrick Tutwiler at $125,000."
вау! Вот куда нужно было идти - в школьные суперинтенданты!
